Nocturnals
A One Night Exhibit & Sale of Works by Tony Teal
A one night sale and exhibit of oil paintings by Tony Teal will be held on Saturday, August 30, at OutCentral. The show, ‘Nocturnals,’ will feature his latest works which examine the visual effects of light and shadow on the urban landscape
at night, as well as many of his earlier works. A reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. for visitors 18 years of age and older. 20% of all proceeds will benefit OutCentral.
Tony Teal, a native of East Nashville, Tennessee, creates figurative and landscape oil paintings based on photographs taken throughout his life. Using the photographs as reference in combination with life drawings from the studio, Teal layers paint to make an image that appears to be a loose rendition of reality. The surface of the canvas and application of paint become just as an important aspect of the picture as the subject and environment that is depicted.
Teal says, ‘I feel intrigued by the trees and city lights after the sun goes down. Walks along illuminated avenues, strolls through public parks, late night drives along bustling boulevards, and clandestine meeting places under a nocturnal sky are subjects of my latest works on canvas. These paintings are based on photographs taken as I experienced my East and West Nashville neighborhoods after hours. My interest is to express the visual effects of light and shadow from human activity on the urban landscape at night.’
His most recent shows include: ‘A Nashville Neighborhood,’ at the Parthenon in Centennial Park and ?Inner Journey,’ held at Vanderbilt's Sarratt Student Gallery. Some of these painting will also be at OutCentral as part of a retrospective exhibit.

Responding to Community Concerns
As news spreads concerning the possible closing of OutLoud! Books & Gifts, several people have raised the question,
"What will happen to OutCentral if the bookstore closes?" The short, easy answer is,
"Nothing. Absolutely Nothing."
The lease that we hold is not directly with OutLoud! Books & Gifts. Instead, it is with Kevin Medley Enterprises, LLC, a corporation which leases space to OutCentral and OutLoud! Books & Gifts. If the bookstore is sold or even closes, the business that moves into the space will also be renting from Kevin Medley Enterprises. As many of you will recognize, Kevin Medley is one of the co-owners of OutLoud! Books & Gifts.
When we negotiated our lease, we did so thinking of worse-case senarios. This was one of the possibilities. Our lease is secure and there will be no need to leave for several years. By that time, we expect to have outgrown the space on Church Street.
We encourage people with questions to
always go to the source rather than rely on the grapevine. If you ever have questions, please feel free to email us at
